Urticaria (hives) is an outbreak of raised, itchy, pale or red wheals on the skin. Acute urticaria often follows a food, drug or infection; chronic urticaria lasts for weeks or months and frequently has no identifiable trigger.
Common signs
- Itchy wheals that appear suddenly and shift from place to place
- Swelling of lips, eyelids or hands (angio-oedema)
- Attacks provoked by heat, cold, pressure, sun or stress
- Recurrence after stopping antihistamines
How homoeopathy approaches it
Rather than suppressing the symptom alone, a homoeopathic physician studies the whole person — the pattern of complaints, what makes them better or worse, general health, temperament and history — and selects a remedy that matches that individual picture. Treatment aims to raise the body’s own resistance so that relief is lasting and relapses become fewer. Chronic, recurring urticaria is one of the conditions where constitutional homoeopathic treatment is especially helpful.
